Walk Cycle
2026
7” x 14”, double weave pickup with cotton yarns
A simple 3 frame walk cycle I made this summer to practice animation basics on the loom. It is reversable (the opposite side can be seen in the gallery page.) The grid system of plain weave pickup is actually incredibly helpful to maintain proportions while “advancing frames.” I like to animate frame by frame on a single page, where I can visually estimate because of smaller scale drawing, but for this, and especially going forward with larger, more complex motions, the grid is a tool to rely on. Another observation I had is that this method of animating is highly similar to flipnote drawing on a DS, and I am exploring ways to mimic screentones and other textural effects, either with patterns or with paint/inks. More to come.
